Welcome
Finding the right person to work with when we are facing difficulties or feeling stuck in our lives can be an arduous and expensive task and it usually comes at a time when we are already feeling vulnerable or low in energy and confidence.
It is my intention that through browsing this website you will come to understand the ways in which I work and the values I hold as important both professionally and personally. I hope that you will come to know me a little so that you can make an informed decision about whether I am someone with whom you feel willing to work.
Who is Annie Sloss?
Professionally
I am a Registered Nurse Therapist with over twenty years experience as a therapist in the fields of adult and adolescent psychiatry, addictions, and trauma informed therapy. I also provide professional supervision and training for individuals and groups.
I have a Masters degree in creative arts therapy, am trained in Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing therapy (EMDR) have undertaken extensive study in narrative therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) and relationships therapy and have been practising mindfulness meditation since 1996. More recently my work has been inspired the latest developments in neuro science and by the deeply compassionate work of world leaders in the trauma field Janina Fisher, Pat Ogden and Jules Taylor Shore.
In my work I strive to avoid giving advice to or making interpretations of the experiences of the people who consult with me. I am trained instead to walk beside people respectfully asking skilful questions designed to help them make their own meanings and find their own answers.
Personally
I am fifty something years old. I grew up in a small town in New Zealand, studied nursing and then moved to Australia in 1991. I have lived in Melbourne since 2001 and currently live in the inner north with my lovely husband and two handsome cats. In my twenties and thirties I was quite adventurous and enjoyed travelling in the developing world and living in interesting locations. Now I am happiest at home working in my garden and enjoying the pleasure of belonging to one place.
I love to dance and am especially passionate about West African dance, have dabbled in theatre and percussion and enjoy making things with my hands.
Where the psychiatric system or pathologizing viewpoint might see a symptom or a problem, i see a unique and skilful adaptation that we might not yet understand.
I just really love my job and the people I have the privilege to meet and consult with.
What an amazing experience I have each day with people entrusting me to help them make sense of their precious stories and share their hopes, as they come to know themselves in new exciting ways. Witnessing their courage to listen deeply to themselves, to connect with their bodies, to celebrate and to grieve, overcome difficulties, improve their relationships, and connect to their authentic selves.
Throughout my career I have been constantly inspired and amazed by the ability of people to overcome adversity, and particularly by this innate desire people have to be better, kinder, more loving, more authentic and more generous.

Annie is very welcoming and her presence always brings a feeling of calm. There is no pressure or expectations in her sessions and knowing this helped relieve my anxiety. I always felt safe talking to her. Annie was respectful of my feelings and guided me gently, helping me find my own way. I'm so grateful for her generous ear, her wise counsel and most of all, her wonderful sense of humour. I always walked taller as I left her office.
Michele.
